There is nothing quite as soul-warming as a hot chocolate on a chilly day. Little Chef and I were invited down Chocolateria San Churro at Hillarys Boat Harbour, for a spot of afternoon tea. The café overlooks the pretty harbour and even on a cold weekday afternoon it was bustling.

San Churros is most famous for its Spanish style donuts – churros. As well as these, chocolate also features heavily on the menu – from dipping sauces, to hand made truffles and of course – the decadent hot chocolates with a difference.

The Drinks

First to the hot chocolates… There are a whopping thirteen types on the san Churro menu! From cookie butter, to hazelnut and even chilli – there is sure to be a hot drink here to tickle all tastebuds. Little Chef chose the “Drop & Choc”, which comes in dark or white chocolate. He loves white chocolate – so opted for that. The white chocolate ice cream scoop and choc disc served on top of the hot chocolate.

The idea of this is that the heat melts the chocolate disc and the ice-cream drops into the hot chocolate!

I loved the “Velvety Vegan” (no, I’m definitely not vegan!). I tend to avoid a lot of milk these days, so their Bonsoy option was a winner for me. The dairy free milk chocolate is melted and frothed with Bonsoy, and topped with vegan chocolate drizzle and choc shavings. It was rich, creamy and everything a hot chocolate should be, I would have never guessed it was dairy free.

The Food

Onto the churros and Little Chef loved the “Berried in Ruby” Churros snack pack. Can you believe this is a mini size?! Fluffy mini churros are drizzled with ruby chocolate and white chocolate, with scrumptious ruby ice cream, strawberries and topped with freeze-dried raspberries.

I had a low gluten “churros journey’ served with four dip-cups of ruby, milk, dark & white chocolate. For fans of ruby chocolate, San Churro have lots of this on their menu. I love the new variety and think it takes like a berry white chocolate. The gluten free churros have a possibility of cross-contamination, so are marked as “low gluten”. These are tasty, but I suspect not as fluffy as the real deal.

This afternoon experience was lush. If you love a sweet treat, Chocolateria San Churro in Hillarys (and found all around Perth) is a chocolate ‘n churro spot not to be missed!
