A “problem” I’ve long since faced, as a food writer, is always being on the hunt for something new. The downside of this, is that I rarely revisit restaurants and cafes – even if they knock my socks off. One exception to this is Laika Coffee Lathlain. Their brilliantly thought-out brunch menu has me returning time and again.
Hidden in the heart of Lathlain, bustling Laika is a neighborhood haunt that makes me wish I lived within walking distance. Found amongst a cool row of retail spaces, including a quirky gift shop, an artisan baker, Pilates studio and more. This little pocket of Perth is found right next to the West Coast Eagles’ training ground. You may even spot a footy star lining up for a coffee hit.
A dedicated roastery, Laika’s own coffee is roasted on-site, and it’s good! Sit inside the lively cafe, outside in the laneway, or in the grassy rear courtyard. Doggos are welcome too. Big and little ballers may even like to shoot some hoops!

Laika’s “cheffy” brunch menu offers a wide range of all the usual brunch dishes, with a twist. If you like to try something a little different with a morning cuppa joe, pull up a chair here! Mr H swapped up his usual brunch go-to of scrambled eggs, instead relishing Laika’s take on eggs benny. Perfectly poached eggs, velvety chipotle hollandaise and the main attractions – a spicy slow cooked beef brisket and crisp rosti are a big hit.
If you’re in the mood for something sweet, the house made crumpets served with berry compote, vanilla mascarpone and grilled banana is sure to satisfy your cravings. I loved the tomato and bocconcini on toast, served with a side of bacon.
Laika Coffee is a brunch-lovers haven. It’s heady mix of a bustling inner-city vibe, drool worthy menu and great coffee. Whether you’re craving classic brunch staples or innovative dishes, Laika dishes up both with consistency. Every visit will leave you with a full tummy, a caffeine buzz, and a smile on your face. It always has me coming back for more.
