Local and Aesthetic, Mount Lawley

I love a cheffy brunch, something that promises much more than your average egg on toast, something that elevates typical breakfast dishes to another level. Local and Aesthetic, found at the quieter end of Mount Lawley’s Beaufort Street, is such a spot. Put it on your to do list.

The breezy café has oodles of space, good for 2022 , when you don’t really want to be sat on top of the people at the next table. There’s a small outdoor area, and a few comfy sofas if you prefer to drink your coffee Friends-style. And the coffees here are good. An award-winning  Kaltiva local roast is used. Tea, juices, kombucha, and all the usual suspects round out the drinks menu.

Local and Aesthetic – The Menu

So, what’s on this rave-worthy menu? There’s many breakfast and lunch favourites with a few twists, as well as some creative seasonal dishes showcasing WA bush foods. I love that! Think Smashed avo with a vegemite cracker or granola with lemon myrtle.

A generous man-sized big “Open Bacon and Egg Sando” has a runny poached egg, bacon, bush chutney, parmesan and wilted greens topped on a thick slice of sourdough bread.

I love the delicate house cured salmon. What a smashing dish! The delicious, thinly sliced fish is served with creamy lemon myrtle whipped fetta, along with tangy pickles and herbs, on bread.

I came close to adding a poached egg, but restrained myself and you know what, I’m glad I did. The dish is lovely in its simplicity, and certainly didn’t need to be over-egged.

As well as the cafe, the building has a few retail spots to check out. I have a quickly growing vinyl collection at home, and it sure is hard to leave Rhubarb Records empty handed! More on my music love coming soon. There’s also local art created by Indigenous artists at the FISH retail space, and more.
