You know spring is in full swing when it’s time for strawberry picking in Perth! Local to us, Sue and Tim’s Strawberry Farm in Wanneroo is open for pick your own strawberries.
I couldn’t believe at the ripe old age of 10 years old (and thirty *cough cough*), Little Chef and I had never gone strawberry picking! This is especially surprising as we live slap bang in the middle of prime strawberry picking land, near Wanneroo.
So, in an attempt to enjoy some spring sunshine, support local business and show Little Chef where his food comes from (not a plastic punnet on a supermarket shelf), we headed to Sue and Tim’s Strawberry Farm in Wanneroo.

At the tent we have the choice of purchasing a $8 box, which can be filled level – with about 2-3kgs of berries. Or pay an extra $2 to fill it with as many strawberries as you can fit. We saw some people leave with some massive piles! If you don’t have time to pick your own, the stall also has pre-picked a trays of strawberries, avocados and fresh garlic for sale.
We found that the best strawberries were found past the halfway mark in each row, maybe that was as we were picking in the late afternoon? Little Chef and I selected a row empty of other pickers, we checked each strawberry plant, picking the strawberries that looked ripe, red and juicy. These are often hiding under lush green leaves – so be sure to have a gentle poke about.
Little Chef ate some strawberries along the way – you can’t get much fresher than that. He loved to hunt out the biggest, reddest berries and even said to me, unprompted “I’ve learnt where my strawberries come from” – a proud foodie Mumma moment!
We had a bundle of fun and we left with a delicious haul of ultra-fresh strawberries.
As well as eating lots fresh (mine with whipped cream), I also made a BIG batch of sweet strawberry jam.
Strawberry picking is good, cheap fun – perfect for a sunny spring day.
