Holly Rayes, Bassendean

Holly Rayes

You cant miss Holly Rayes, in Bassendean for two reasons…

  • A delicious brunch menu and
  • THAT vibrant Anya Brock mural!

Having first visited Holly Rayes a few years ago, I was well overdue for another brunch at this Bassendean gem. The café is found on an unassuming side street, just look for the colourful dog mural.

The owner Holly, opened the café with her mum in the kitchen who has. previously baked at the scrumptious Sherbet Cake and Bake shop. So it’s no surprise that there are many tempting sweet things like cakes, cookie sandwiches and more in the cabinet.

Holly Rayes has now became so popular it has grown into the building next-door. This has made way for more tables and a much more spacious feel.

I’m loving herbal tea at the moment. I have to have a turmeric tea every single morning. At Holly Rayes, I chose the “lemonzilla” blend, made with lemongrass.

The Food

The all-day brekkie menu has lots of breakfast staples, as well as a few quirky dishes. One of my go-to brunch dishes – Eggs benedict, $23 came with plenty of meaty pulled pork and lashings of buttery hollandaise sauce. The poached eggs were perfectly gooey too. Usually served on sourdough, I opted for the gluten free toast, sourced from Mary Street Bakery.

The breakfast gnocchi ($19) is new to me! My Dad was a willing guineapig and enjoyed the Parisian gnocchi, which is a made with a choux dough. The tasty pillows are served with crisp bacon bits, mushrooms, a sunny side up fried egg, and a sage and thyme butter. He added a few golden hash browns for $5.

I love the use of mismatched retro plates, straight out of my 1980’s childhood. My “little Raye of sunshine”, Little Chef, had a few choices. A small kids menu offers eggs on toast, as well as a couple of toasties.  Little Chef picked a ham and cheese toastie, $10.

We really enjoyed our brunch Holly Raye’s. The food is well cooked, and very, very tasty.
