There are a few places in Perth where dinner comes with a front-row seat to one of the city’s best shows – the skyline flickering to life as the sun slips behind King’s Park. At Miss Chow’s in South Perth, that view is part of the experience.
Set right on the foreshore, this modern Asian eatery leans into its location with floor-to-ceiling windows, a polished fit-out and a menu designed for long, share-style dinners that stretch well into the evening.
Miss Chow’s has built its reputation on premium Western Australian produce and a refined take on Asian flavours. There’s no MSG in sight, but you wouldn’t know it from the depth of flavour across the menu. Everything is bold, balanced and thoughtfully executed, feeling equally suited to a special occasion or an elevated midweek date night.
Miss Chow’s South Perth – The Menu
The menu is designed for sharing, with a strong focus on gluten-free options. We started with the pan-seared WA scallops with burnt miso butter, a standout from the first bite. They arrive plump and perfectly caramelised, with a rich, umami-laden butter. They are quite possibly the meatiest, most delicious scallops I’ve ever had and a dish that sets the tone for everything that follows.
From there, the spicy fried chicken with chilli mayo delivers crisp, golden pieces with a punchy heat, balanced by a creamy, slightly tangy mayo. The morsels disappear quickly from the plate.
Dumplings are, of course, a cornerstone of the Miss Chow’s experience. The gluten-free signature steamed dumplings — filled with pork, chicken and vegetables — are delicate but satisfying. As a GF-er, it’s a dish I don’t often get to enjoy.
Mr H savours the crispy beef cheek dumplings, which bring a deeper, richer flavour, with tender meat wrapped in a golden, crunchy shell. They’re indulgent without being heavy, and an easy crowd-pleaser. I wish I could try those!
Onto something more substantial, the 30-day aged striploin with truffle soy glaze is a highlight. Cooked perfectly medium rare, and rested just the right amount of time, the steak is tender and full of flavour, elevated by the earthy richness of truffle.
A side of rice is a must at any Asian spot and at Miss Chow’s, it also comes with a side of luxe. The prawn and black truffle fried rice with shiitake is a side dish that could easily steal the spotlight. Fragrant, studded with prawns and layered with umami from the mushrooms and truffle, it’s comforting yet elevated, and worth ordering even if you think you’re too full.
We decided to undo the top button and squeeze in a dessert each. I enjoyed a creme brulee, while Mr H chose a chocolate lava cake.
To drink, the cocktail list is playful and polished, making it easy to sip as the sky shifts from gold to deep blue.
